Commitment to a high school by 2022

The 2018 school year has come to a close but school is definitely in regarding the bipartisan support for the Bungendore High School over the last six months, with both major parties promising a Bungendore High School during the next term of government.

The NSW Government will build public high schools at Jerrabomberra and Bungendore, signalling the largest capital investment in school infrastructure across Monaro.

Friday's historic announcement made by the Deputy Premier and Member for Monaro, John Barilaro, means students no longer have to cross the border to attend high school. Back in July Mr Barilaro conducted a survey with regards to support for the high school. 'The support from the community was overwhelmingly positive,' said Mr Barilaro. 'The data showed that rather than move away, families will stay in Bungendore when the high school is built, and parents would be open to changing their child's high school enrolments in order to send them to school in Bungendore. It is clear that families want their children to be educated close to home, in their local community.'

In September this year approximately 60 people attended the Labor Education Forum at the Memorial Hall in Bungendore and in October, Monaro Labor candidate, Bryce Wilson, also made the commitment to build a public high school in Bungendore in the next term of government.

The site for a high school has always been an issue, however Mr. Barilaro has advised 'Over the past few months I have been actively searching for a suitable site for the Bungendore High School, and I'm thrilled to announce we have three suitable sites, all accessible and well located. These sites are all privately owned, so further confidential negotiations will continue from here and we will narrow it down and publicly announce the chosen site shortly.'

'We are also looking at the option of creating an education precinct in Bungendore which would mean not just a new high school but added investment to the primary school. Our students will always come first. At the end of the say the site that offers the best outcome for the students and the community will be the selected site.'

It's fabulous news for local families who will no longer have to cross the border to receive their high school education.
